Joplin joins America Recycles Day celebration

Joplin, MO -

The Joplin Recycling Center is celebrating America Recycles Day, a national event also celebrated by other recycling centers.  The event is actually Sunday, but the recycling center is closed Sundays.

Staff was available to explain collection bins and feeders, or answer any trash and recycling questions.

It's meant to shine a light on some not top-of-the-mind recyclable items, like shampoo and mouthwash bottles, plastic bags, and consumer electronics.

Mary Anne Phillips with Joplin's recycling center says, "If you look to the west, just north of Lamar, you'll see where Joplin's trash goes.  There's a landfill in Lamar, it's called Prairieville Landfill.  So, next time you drive up 49 highway, just take a look over there and think, well, do I want my trash to go there forever, or do I want to take it to the recycling center?"

"I just think it's necessary to recycle, because it saves on supplies.  We're not tearing down our trees, it's saving the environment.  It's just very beneficial on all aspects of it, it's not wasteful," says recycle participant Chelsey Davenport.

You can post a photo of yourself holding a recyclable product with #IwillRecycle for a chance to win a prize from Keep America Beautiful.
