RELEASE FROM PITTSBURG STATE ATHLETICS:

PITTSBURG — Pittsburg State University head basketball coach announced today (Nov. 12) that Brandon Smithey, a senior at Marcus High School in Flower Mound, Texas, has signed a national letter of intent to join the Gorillas for the 2016-17 season.

Smithey, a 6-foot-3, 188-pound shooting guard earned first-team All-District honors for the Marauders as a junior in 2014-15, averaging 11 points, three rebounds and two assists per game and shooting 40 percent from 3-point range.

"As a basketball program that continues to make efforts to build its base with impact freshmen players, I believe we have taken a big step in that direction with the signing of Brandon Smithey," Muff said. "Brandon is a kid who will fit into our system quickly and provide our team with another perimeter threat with his range and accuracy.

"Most importantly Brandon understands the importance of family. With the love and support he receives from his own family, he transfers that into a strong bond and allegiance towards his teammates and school. Pittsburg State and Gorilla Nation should be excited about his competitive spirit and skills he brings to the basketball court, but more importantly the values and loyalty he will bring to the University!"

Smithey is the first player to sign with Pitt State for the 2016-17 season. He is the son of Rodney and Lucy Smithey. Brandon plans to pursue a degree in education at Pittsburg State.
