New VA clinics announced for Joplin and Springfield

Updated:
Joplin, MO -

Plans are announced for a new veterans clinic in Joplin.  It will take the place of a current veterans clinic in Mt. Vernon, MO.  Another clinic will be built in Springfield.  Veterans Health Care System officials say most of the veterans going to the Mt. Vernon clinic are from Joplin and Springfield, and health care system officials say more veterans would use the new VA clinic simply because they would be closer.

"In addition to the 17,000 veterans that are currently utilizing those services, we anticipate an additional 14,000 veterans.  About 9,000 from Springfield, and 5,000 from the Joplin area," says Dr. Mark Worley with the Veterans Health Care System of the Ozarks.

"The way we're going to be distributing our staff is about 60 percent of our current staff are going to be located in the Springfield clinic, moving from Mount Vernon.  And about 40 percent moving over to Joplin," says Worley.

"We're also trying to be very sensitive to our veterans there in Mount Vernon.  We currently work with the Disabled American Veterans, they provide the shuttle service currently to Joplin and Springfield to help get the patients to Mount Vernon.  Likewise, we'll have that same type of shuttle service to get those veterans from mount Vernon to those clinics at Springfield or to Joplin," says Worley.

Veterans Affairs officials plan on also hiring additional medical staff for the two new clinics.  No land has been picked yet for either the Joplin or Springfield location.  VA hospital officials hope to have the new Joplin and Springfield clinics up and running two and a half years after this February.
