Joplin Man Drops Gift Cards Exiting Store, Couple Behind Him Takes Off with Them

Updated:
JOPLIN, MISSOURI -

Authorities say more people become targets thieves this time of year.Joplin resident Weslie Watkins was walking out of Walmart Wednesday when he accidentally dropped $200 worth of gift cards. The gift cards were to be prizes in a bingo game for residents at a senior living home where he works. And when the store checked security footage investigators discovered the couple about ten feet behind him took off with the bag of gift cards.

Watkins says "I felt like anyone else feels when they lose their wallet or their keys, a sinking feeling. And my second thought was that it's good that we have some people that do care and our concerned. And the police followed up on this. "

Corporal Chuck Niess of the Joplin Police Department says "Obviously you want to keep your wallet or your purse close to you. You know, ladies might want to consider not even taking a purse with them, just carry a small wallet that they can keep on their person. Just don't leave things lying on the counter while you're checking out so you don't forget them."

Police also say to be aware of your surroundings and hide your packages in your trunk. Walmart was able to deactivate all Watkins’s gift cards and issue new ones.
