Residents Encouraged to Report Flood Damage

Updated:
CHEROKEE COUNTY, KANSAS -

In an effort to determine how many homes have been impacted by recent flooding, Cherokee County Emergency Management and the Kansas Department of Emergency Management plan to begin conducting damage assessments in the flood impact zone beginning on Wednesday,

December 29, 2015. Residents who know that their homes and property have been damaged are asked to contact Emergency Management at 620-429-1857 (if there is no answer, please leave a message). Residents can also email cksodispatch@gmail.com and are asked to provide their names, property address and a phone number.

The First Baptist Church in Baxter Springs (1005 East Avenue) is coordinating the collection and distribution of donated items. At this time clothing items are being discouraged, but cleaning supplies will be in demand. The First Baptist Church can be reached at 620-856-5676.

All major highways that were closed due to flooding have been re-opened as of Tuesday afternoon. There remain some county roads that are deemed impassable due to high water.

As the water continues to lower, and residents begin to inspect their homes and property, they are reminded about potential risks associated with electric and other utilities, along with other dangers that may be present as a result of the flooding and debris that had moved downstream.
