Abreu Moves on From Blasters

Updated:

Winston Abreu, the all-star closer for the Joplin Blasters, has signed a contract to play with the Oaxaca Guerreros of the Mexican League (AAA).

Winston Abreu has been pitching professionally since 1994 where he has pitched all over the world including 3 years in the Major Leagues with the Baltimore Orioles, Tampa Bay Rays, Washington Nationals, and Cleveland Indians.  This past year with the Joplin Blasters may have been his best.  The 38 year old dominated the American Association posting an incredible 0.77 ERA while saving 23 games with 5 wins and only 1 loss.  Even more astounding were his 80 strikeouts in 47 innings pitched.  The top closer in the league was as automatic as it gets in the 9th inning giving up only 4 earned runs the entire year.

“I have never seen a season as good as the one Winston put together this past year,” said Blasters CEO Gabriel Suarez. “His slider was devastating, and coupled with a 90+ mph fastball he was unhittable.  It was a treat to watch him close games for the Joplin Blasters in Joe Becker Stadium.  We couldn’t be happier to see him get this opportunity and further his career.”

The Joplin Blasters start their 2nd season in the South division of the American Association of Professional Baseball in May 2016.  They will play 50 of their 100 games at Joe Becker Stadium.  For 2016 season tickets call (417) 622-4838 or visit the Blasters’ offices Monday – Thursday from 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. located at 131 South High Avenue in Joplin, Missouri.
