City Works to Solve Traffic Congestion at 20th and Indiana Near Overpass Construction

Updated:

Changes are coming at the intersection of 20th and Indiana in Joplin after the city received complaints about traffic congestion due to the closing of east 20th.

This morning a steady stream of cars and trucks rolled into the Joplin high school parking lot. It’s traffic some call scary.

Melissa Hudson who dropped off a student says, "I worry I’m going to be rear ended or they're gonna stop where they're not supposed to  and get rear ended."

Student Alex Miller drives himself and says, "I haven't been in an accident but I've seen them. They come out and hit."

Complaints to the city prompted action to get traffic moving faster through the intersection where twelve to fifteen vehicles stack up easily in the morning commute.

The assistant director of Public Works Engineering Dan Salisbury said crews took action immediately. "We noticed the contractors trucks were backing into the construction zone which took forever so we stopped that and we adjusted the signal time. They are adaptive signals and the adaptive part of it had been turned off. "

The signal's cameras are now triggered by the traffic to go green and stay green longer for Indiana and allow left turns onto 20th to the west.

Salisbury says, "It’s constantly looking at the traffic coming in and adjusting for it. It’s not a predetermined cycle. It changes.  So at the busy parts of the day, it’s going to change that timing automatically."

Construction barricades were tripping the signal for east 20th so that sides technology was disabled.

With cars moving through the intersection more smoothly, another congestion problem could be solved.

Hudson says, "It really makes it hard to pull out especially if you're trying to go north. It’s practically impossible in the mornings to get that direction. So a lot of times I go this way (points right) to go that way, (points left)."

The city will also add no parking signs on south Indiana to keep lanes clear.  But drivers can also use other entrances.

Salisbury adds, "We really encourage parents to go to the south access.  That access point is not being  used fully especially to pick up kids in the afternoon  and that would help relieve the congestion some.

The city is also looking at creating a right turn lane on 20th to merge into the school entrance on Indiana.

20th street  is expected to reopen in late august when the overpass construction is finished.
