Joplin's Brown Leads MSSU Over UCM



Joplin, Mo. – Charlie Brown scored a career-high 29 points and the Missouri Southern men's basketball team won 100-89 over visiting Central Missouri today onRobert Corn Court inside the Leggett & Platt Athletic Center.
Southern (10-6, 7-3 MIAA) was led by Brown's 29 points on 8-14 from the field and 9-12 from the free throw line.Taevaunn Prince scored 25 points and added six rebounds and a career-high seven assists, while making 15-17 free throws. DJ Feitl scored 14 points and added six boards, while Austin Wright scored 12 points on 4-5 from long-range. Wright now has 221 career three pointers, needing just four to break the career mark of 224 held by Skyler Bowlin.
Central (9-5, 3-5 MIAA) was led by 28 points from D'Marnier Cunningham. Marquiez Lawrence scored 18 points.
Central opened up a 7-2 lead early on, but a layup from Isaac Kreuer tied the score at seven with 14:13 to go. The game was tied again at nine, before the Lions took a 12-9 lead on a three-point play from DJ Feitl with 11:55 to go.
The Southern lead reached eight (28-20) after a layup from Blaine Miller with 6:05 to go in the half. Central got to within one twice late in the half, but a layup from Feitl with 2:06 gave the Lions a 37-31 lead, however, the Mules went on a 6-2 run to close the half with the Lions leading 39-37 at the break.
Both teams traded baskets early on in the second half, but a running jumper off the glass for Prince with 12:12 to go in the half gave the Lions a 62-55 lead and a three-point play from Prince the next trip down pushed the lead up to ten (65-55).
A three pointer from Brown with just under 11 left pushed the lead to 68-55, and another three from Brown the next trip down made the score 71-55, running the Lions' run to 23-7 and forcing a Mules' timeout.
Southern pushed its lead to 17 after a pair of free throws from Taylor Luster with just over four minutes to go. Central worked the lead down to six with 1:38 to go, but a three from Feitl with 43 seconds left made the score 100-87 to seal the win.
Southern shot 57 percent in the game from the field, while making 55 percent of its long-range shots and 82 percent from the charity stripe. The 100 points scored by the Lions in regulation are the first time Central Missouri has given up 100 in regulation since the 2002 season.
The Lions had a 32-28 advantage in the paint and forced 12 turnovers, scoring 14 points off of the miscues.
The Lions will be back in action a week from today as Southern travels to Pittsburg State. Tip off from John Lance Arena is slated for 3:30 pm.
