Suspicious Death in Miami

Updated:
MIAMI, OKLAHOMA -

Across the street neighbor Cheyenne Gibson says "Crushed. We just seen him yesterday. He was perfectly fine."

Her roommate Odessa Miller says "I'm just lost."

The pair grieves the loss of 23-year-old Caleb Friend who was found dead Tuesday night with a gunshot wound to the head.

Police say two of his friends were stopping by just before midnight to visit Caleb when they knocked on the door and he didn't answer. The door was unlocked and the pair found Caleb lying face down in his living room in a pool of blood.

Miami Police Chief Thomas Anderson says "When they got there, he was motionless. Officers immediately arrived at the scene checked Mr. Friend and he appeared to be deceased. So we immediately secured the scene."

At the direction of the Ottawa County District Attorney's Office the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation was soon called in to assist the Miami Police Department. They are treating this case as a suspicious death.

Chief Anderson says "Just the appearance of the scene when the investigating officers got there. they didn't feel right and thought maybe there was some questionable circumstances."

Several neighbors say the victim was a good man and they never expected anything like this to happen to someone they treated as part of the family.

Gibson says he was "pretty laid back. He was pretty cool."

Miller says "He was a good guy. I mean, he worked with kids with disabilities and what not. He was definitely a kid person. He loved to help 'em out and sit there and he had so much of patience. And he was just majorly a big caring guy.”

Gibson says "No matter what he was always looking out for somebody."

"Always,” says Miller.

OSBI is the lead on this investigation. Caleb Friend's body has been taken to the medical examiner's office in Tulsa for autopsy.
