Joplin City Hall memo: Blasters team can market itself more

Updated:
Joplin, MO -

A newly released memo from a Joplin city worker shows how some at City Hall feel the Joplin Blasters baseball team can improve its business.

The memo, from Joplin's finance director to Joplin's city manager and city council, was sent out in October, after the Blasters wrapped up its inaugural season.  The beginning of the letter centers around the Blasters then-proposal to extend the lease of Joe Becker Stadium.  The finance director did not recommend this measure, and a different proposal ended up being recently passed by city council.

But the finance director also included some lessons learned from the Blasters' first season of operation.  The Blasters online sold hats, shirts, and jerseys with the team's logo.  Nonetheless, the city finance director said the team's rights to the Blasters name is a revenue opportunity for the team that has gone "untapped."

A big part of the Blasters' success this upcoming season is attracting more paying ticket holders.  According to Joplin's mayor, the team needs to increase its average attendance at home by 500 people in order for the team to break-even and pay rent to the city.

The Blasters' owner refused to tell us if he plans on changing any of the team's marketing.  The team's owner says he has agreements with other people to do interviews.
