USD 250 Schools Bond Election Results

Updated:

The votes are in and counted from a Pittsburg school bond proposal.

The proposal fails by more than 800 votes.
     42 percent yes.
     58 percent no.
The mail-in ballots had to be in by noon today.

The 67-point-six million dollar bond would have meant an increase in property taxes to fund remodeling and expansion at the high school -- the demolition and rebuilding of the old part of the middle school --  and storm shelters at each elementary school.

USD 250 Superintendent Destry Brown says the district will lick its wounds for the next couple days before discussing alternative proposals, though expects those discussions to begin before the next school board meeting. Brown said he was happy about the 44 percent voter turnout, although disappointed by the result. He said there is no Plan B for what will happen to USD 250 facilities because they thought they put the best proposal together, although he hesitated to say the voters made the wrong decision.

"My hope would be that as a community we come together. We work together on a new plan that everyone can support. We still have space issues at the schools. We still have a heating and air system at the high school that needs to be replaced. And we still have safety issues that we need to address. So we need our community to help us develop a new plan that we can accommodate for those needs," Brown said.

The Superintendent added he doesn't expect the district to re-introduce this same proposal saying, "the community has already spoken," and said the district will have to reach out to community members to figure out exactly what the community didn't like about the bond proposal.
