"Faithful Friends" Opens Animal Shelter in Neosho

Updated:
NEOSHO, MISSOURI -

"Faithful Friends Adoption Center" Director Hayley Lagarce says "It's wonderful. It's great to finally have a place to put the animals."

"Faithful Friends" celebrates the opening of its brand new shelter in Neosho.

Now serving the areas of Newton and McDonald County, where for a longtime there was no place for homeless animals to go.

Neosho City Manager Troy Royer says "It'll be nice for us, we spend a lot of gas a lot of time, man power taking animals to either Carthage or Joplin."

"They're both so overrun with animals from the counties they work with. So there was a huge demand for a place for animals to go to,” says Lagarce.

Every day the shelter goes through two of these big bags that's about 100 lbs  of dog food. Plus, three more of these bags, about a hundred pounds of kitty litter, and 45 pounds of cat chow, all to take care of the 70 animals currently living here.

Lagarce says "It takes a lot of volunteers, ideally 40-45 people consistently coming out every week to work shifts. It also takes a lot of money. We're supported by a thrift store that we have in town. And we're also supported just by private donations."

The majority of the animals taken in are from unwanted litters. Soon the shelter plans to offer free or reduced cost spay and neuter and sign a contract with the city of Neosho

Royer says "We do have a real problem in Neosho and I know in other cities of feral cats and stuff like that. And the spay and neuter program would help tremendously in controlling that."

If you want to check out any of the dogs and cats looking for homes, "Faithful Friends" offers free tours of their facility. They are also still looking for volunteers to help out on the weekends.
