Redings Mill Fire Dept. Seeks Volunteer Scholars

Updated:
REDINGS MILL, MO -

Freshman Tanner Warner isn't having the typical college experience living in the dorms.

He says "I was living in... there's Station 6 right off Eland Road, and then they moved me to Station 2 with a new roommate."

And he's fighting fires.

"I mean, I'll be sitting there doing homework or something like that and then we'll get toned out for a call, and then get up and go to it, so I like that. It's pretty cool."

The Redings Mill Fire Protection District is looking for a handful more student volunteers like Warner to join the force.

Deputy Fire Chief Michael White says "We have three positions in the Volunteer Scholars Program, but we'd actually take additional folks out of the community that want to come volunteer. Again, they have to live in our fire district, in Redings Mill area and south. But we could actually use about another 10 volunteers to come to our department."

In exchange for volunteer service besides free room and board, students also earn an annual $10,000 scholarship towards four years of college tuition.

"It's a good one two punch and it's a great way for somebody who wants to join the fire service to learn about the systems, become a trained firefighter free of charge, and get some college education paid for. "

It's a win-win for both parties. The students not only get hands on training in the field, but the fire department gets an extra officer in the force.

"Many of the folks that are in our program are either hired at our department for full time positions or others in the area."

Real world training that puts students like Warner in the line of fire.

"I actually got to go inside and make the initial attack and stuff like and see flames and all that cool stuff,” he says.

Applications are due March 10th. All applicants must live or plan to relocate in the 110-square-mile fire district or at the fire station to be considered. For more information contact Deputy Chief Michael White at 417-624-2715.
