Joplin police investigate alleged elderly abuse at home

Joplin, MO -

Joplin police investigate an alleged elderly abuse case.  Police say it happened at 714 East Hill Street.  Police say they were called by Senior Services, a state agency that, among other things, investigates complaints.

Inside the home, police say they found a 79-year-old man with bed sores and filth in his bed.  The man was taken to Mercy Hospital.

Another man who lives at the home told us off-camera that this elderly man has since returned home.

"Depends on the circumstances, but if he doesn't want to stay there, and they can articulate that he has full mental faculties, then he's not going to have to stay there," says Corporal Chuck Niess with the Joplin Police Department.  "If you feel he doesn't have all his mental faculties, then you would obviously keep him there."

Police say family members were in charge of taking care of the elderly man.

"You have to look at, was this deliberate?  This is part of the investigation, but was it deliberate?  Was it the caregivers got overwhelmed?  It was more than they could handle?  If that's the case, mechanisms are in place to help people out," says Niess.

Again, there is an ongoing investigation.  No one has been arrested and no charges have been filed.
