Senator LaTurner's Statement to Governor Brownback regarding latest budget proposal

Updated:
Topeka, KS -

(Senator LaTurner's Statement Regarding Governor Brownback's Latest Budget Proposal)
Assurance has been repeatedly given that Highway 69 will be built on time. The latest proposal from the governor's office is a reversal on that promise, and I will not stand for it. I will strongly and relentlessly oppose any effort to harm Pittsburg State University, cut K-12 schools, or delay Highway 69 from being built.

April 28, 2016

Governor Sam Brownback
2nd Floor, Statehouse
300 SW 10th Avenue
Topeka, KS 66612

Governor Brownback,
The disappointment and anger surrounding the Highway 69 delay is palpable across Southeast Kansas.  The people of Southeast Kansas have been unwavering in their support for this project for several decades. The lack of four lane highway access presents significant safety issues, impedes businesses moving to the area, inhibits the expansion of Pittsburg State University and hinders our ability to compete with Missouri.
Your Administration's recent action delaying Highway 69 is an unacceptable reversal on several personal and public assurances of its construction in 2017.  Now is not the time to delay this project but to make good on the state's commitments.
On behalf of my constituents in Southeast Kansas.  I'm requesting that you direct the Secretary of Transportation to let the project in fiscal year 2017.
Reinstating this project immediately can begin to restore the trust of Southeast Kansas.  But much more importantly, it is the right thing to do.
I look forward to your timely response.

Although these students are too young to vote, they're plenty old enough to care about issues our country is facing today. "Ever since Parkland happened, the shooting at Park Land. I've always had this mentality, like it can happen here" Erie High School sophomore, Matthew Inman attended the Pittsburg March For Our Lives rally, and one of the leaders encouraged people from all congressional districts to hold town hall meetings, the spirit of activism was contagious.
