The Pittsburg State University women's outdoor track & field team surged down the stretch Sunday (May 8) as the Gorillas captured the 2016 MIAA Outdoor Championships at Hershell Neil Track on the campus of Northwest Missouri State University.

The Gorillas compiled 170 points to run away with the team title. Lincoln University finished second with 138 points, while the University of Central Missouri placed third with 127 points.

Emilee Iverson (high jump) and Cassie Caswell (shot put) captured MIAA titles Sunday afternoon as the Gorillas overcame a single-digit deficit to Lincoln, the reigning 2016 MIAA Indoor Champion squad.

Iverson cleared a personal-best 5 feet, 10 inches in the high jump to claim the MIAA crown, while Caswell posted a winning throw of 49-2.5 to earn her MIAA title.

Jasmine Smith followed Caswell with an MIAA runner-up finish in the shot put, throwing 49-1. On the track, Courtney Nelson scored 16 points with MIAA runner-up efforts in the 100 meter hurdles (13.58) and 400 meter hurdles (1:00.57) disciplines.

The 400 meter relay team of Ramie Grayson, Imani Hutchinson, Kelsey Lewis and Nelson also scored an MIAA runner-up finish with a time of 45.42.

Hutchinson added a third-place run in the open 100 meters (12.02) and Lewis followed with a third-place finish in the 200 meters (24.75).

Pitt State earned its second straight MIAA outdoor title and the program's ninth all-time MIAA outdoor crown.
