Jasper County jail to get more cells for inmates with special needs

The Jasper County Sheriff's Office gets the go-ahead to build three new jail cells.  County commissioners approved the project this morning.

The three new jail cells will be for housing suicidal inmates or inmates needing medical care.  Right now, inmates needing medical care are often times put in areas away from constant traffic.  The new cells, though, will be installed near the jail's intake area, where there's almost always foot traffic.

Jail staff say it means they can keep better tabs on the inmates with special needs.

"The staff is always concerned about the inmates' well-being.  We always are.  We always have been.  This way, it makes it easier for the staff to be able to check on them up front and make sure the inmates get all their needs," says Lieutenant Shawn Carnes with the Jasper County Sheriff's Office.

"He (prisoner) comes in a wheelchair or something like that, that we had to take out to the hospital and the hospital would go through and look at the person, but they still need to be, they still need care.  When they kick them back to us, then we will put them in there (new jail cells) so we can actually take care of them," says Carnes.

"Basically, there's going to be two smaller cells and then one bigger cell.  If we have multiple people in there with different medical needs, who can be housed with other inmates, then we can put them in that one cell, too," says Carnes.

The project is expected to take about four months to complete and will cost $194,000.
