Pittsburg Schools Will Be Open For 2016-2017 School Year

Updated:
PITTSBURG, KANSAS -

This past Friday evening, the Kansas Legislature voted and passed a funding bill, in effect keeping Kansas schools open for the 2016-2017 school year.  Legislators had until the end of June to meet Kansas Supreme Court’s ruling for equity of funding, which is a requirement in the state constitution.

The bill, expected for Governor Brownback’s signature, will put $38 million dollars into the state’s budget to fully fund the equity portion of the Gannon vs. Kansas lawsuit.

“I believe this plan meets the requirements of the court for equity,” Superintendent Destry Brown said. “Our schools will remain open as a result of legislators working with school administrators and across party lines.”

The plan includes approximately $300,000 for USD 250, which will come as state aid to the Local Option Budget (LOB). The Local Option Budget is a way for local residents to help fund a local school district.  Kansas law allows residents to supplement the budget the school receives from the state.

“Our current LOB is at the state’s maximum. The $300,000 will come as tax relief and lower the tax contributions from local tax payers,” Brown said.

In addition, the bill will increase funding to USD 250’s capital outlay $130,000 from state aid, which will be new money to be used for facilities.

The Kansas Supreme Court will address the adequacy portion of the lawsuit this fall.
