Adopt a Shelter Dog Month, Pit Bull Awareness Month @ Joplin Humane Society

Updated:
PITTSBURG, KANSAS -

October is Adopt a Shelter Dog Month AND Pitbull Awareness Month, and Joplin Humane Society wants to get the word out about that all shelter dogs, including our adoptable pitties, are amazing pets!

Joplin Humane Society has set a goal for Adopt a Shelter Dog Month; getting every adoptable dog SPONSORED and adopted! The cost to sponsor a shelter dog is $70; individuals can sponsor in honor of or in memory of a beloved person or pet, as a birthday gift. Lysa Boston, Shelter Manager, said there are more than 80 dogs currently available for adoption with more than 30 still needing sponsors. “We have so many amazing dogs waiting for homes and in need of sponsors, with the number growing every day,” she said. Boston said JHS makes it simple to sponsor a pet via their website, www.joplinhumane.org. “You don’t have to pick up the phone, or send an e-mail; you can view all the dogs in need of a sponsor, and with just a few clicks, you can sponsor the dog or dogs of your choice,” she said. “By choosing a pet to sponsor and making a single or recurring monthly donation, you will be not only helping the shelter provide food and medical care for him or her, but also increasing the likelihood that the pet will be adopted or rescued,” she explained. (Learn more about sponsorships here.)

To celebrate Pitbull Awareness Month and help find homes for the amazing pitbull and pitbull mixes dogs available, JHS has lowered the adoption fee for these dogs to just $10. “The fee still includes all vetting including spay/neuter, all vaccines, treatment for internal and external parasites, microchip and heartworm test,” Boston said. “Of course, an approved adoption application is required,” she added. Boston said pitbulls tend to be one of breeds most frequently homeless. “The popularity of the pitbull has really hurt the breed; and an increased number of dogs of any breed always means an increased number of homeless dogs of that breed.”

Joplin Humane Society is open Monday-Thurs 1-5pm, Friday 1-6pm, Saturday 10-5pm and Sunday 1-4pm. More information about our pets and adoption polies can be found at www.joplinhumane.org.
