There's a story behind these quilts, right down to the fabric.
"All the quilt fabric is donated," says Saundra Pierce, president of the Joplin Area Town and Country Quilters group.
When you get to know the volunteers who are part of this group, you'll come to find generosity holds them together. It has been that way since the group was started in 1975. Each year, these volunteers donate what they make.
"They've averaged around 150 quilts a year," says Pierce.
You've probably heard the saying "busy bees" before to describe hard-working individuals. But really, that saying seems most appropriate to begin explaining how this year, the quilt group set a new record.
"Whenever there are five Tuesdays in the month, we use that as a work day," says Pierce.
There are 120 members of this group.
"It's pretty much an ongoing thing. As soon as these get given out, we're ready to start on the next phase," says Pierce.
It has taken a solid year, but these quilters are now ready to give away 177 quilts.
Jordynn Griffith, with Joplin's Life Choices organization, says, "Oh my gosh, it's amazing!"
Life Choices is an organization that helps families in need. The quilters are giving the organization 20 baby quilts, 7 blankets, and 17 burp clothes for babies.
"It just feels so personal to them, that it's not coming with a tag on it. It's not coming from a store with 100 others. But it's really unique and special to them for their babies," says Griffith.
Here's where our story ends. The written part of it, anyway. Five other area organizations are receiving quilts, blankets, and burp clothes. What happens next will go something like this...
"Small children, or even teenagers, who go into some of these crisis centers...that may be the only thing they have that they can call their own," says Pierce.
There are many pieces to these quilts. There are many pieces to life, too. These quilters say their goal is to stitch together care and love.
Members of this quilt group say after the Joplin tornado, they received donated supplies from people across the country.
