Water emergency for Independence, KS

Updated:
INDEPENDENCE, KANSAS -

The City of Independence has declared a water emergency, and this is causing much concern about the water situation in Coffeyville. KDHE is testing the water in the Verdigris River as a result of the chemical explosion in Neodesha. The test results will not be available until this afternoon. Independence is closer to Neodesha which caused them to shut their plant down sooner, and they do not have as much water storage capacity as Coffeyville does, therefore, they did not have time to wait for results.

The City of Coffeyville is waiting to find out the results of the test before making any changes to the water watch. In the meantime, everyone needs to be conservative with water usage. The water is safe to drink and use. Anyone with questions should call 620-252-6163.

This water watch affects all users of Coffeyville water which includes all the cities and rural water districts served by Coffeyville.
