Lions Women Host UNK on Saturday


Coming off their 11 point upset of 25th ranked Fort Hays State, the Missouri Southern Women's will host the University of Nebraska at Kearney Saturday at 1 p.m. inside The Leggett & Platt Athletic Center.

The Series
The Lions lead the series with the former CSIC opponent 18-14. The Lions hold a 10-6 advantage when playing in Joplin and are 2-1 when playing UNK in The Leggett & Platt Athletic Center, however the series is even when in Kearney, Neb. at 8-8. Since the joining of the NCAA D2 ranks Southern holds a 4-2 advantage over UNK. Southern has won six of the last eight against the Lopers with two of those wins coming at UNK's Health & Sports Center/Buckle Court. The longest winning streak by either team is held by the Lions as they won seven games from Jan. 29, 1983 through Feb. 1, 1986. UNK's longest winning streak was four games (twice) Jan. 29, 1977 thru Feb. 4, 1978 and Jan. 30, 1981 thru Feb. 19, 1982.

The Coaches
Missouri Southern
Ronnie Ressel is in his 15th year on the staff at Missouri Southern and his first year at the helm of the women's program. During his three years as an assistant for the women, Ressel had helped the team to a 58-30 record and a 38-22 mark in the MIAA. In 2015-16 the team saw two players earn All-MIAA status as Sharese Jones was a first-team selection, while Deb Holcomb was a third-team pick.

Carrie (Hofstetter) Eighmey was named the seventh head women's basketball coach in Nebraska-Kearney history on March 31st, 2015. In her first year at the helm of the Lopers, she took a team that was picked 10th in the MIAA (Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association) preseason poll and led it to a 16-14 mark.

The Last Time Out
Missouri Southern
The Missouri Southern women's basketball team got career nights from both Desirea Buerge and Jenson Maydew as the Lions took out 25th ranked Fort Hays State tonight in front of more than 1,300 fans at the Leggett & Platt Athletic Center.
Buerge scored a career-high 18 points on 6-11 from the field, 1-2 from long-range and 5-5 from the free throw line. Maydew scored 16 points, just two off of her career-best, but rolled in a career-high three 3's, going 5-10 from the field, 3-4 from long-range and 3-6 from the free throw line, while adding a team-high eight boards. Deb Holcombscored 13 points.

For UNK, Barry (Norfolk Catholic) scored a team-best 27 by making 10 field goals (three triples) and four free throws. In 39 minutes, she also had four assists and two steals.
Senior reserve post Nieka Wheeler (Independence, Mo.) was the only other Loper in double figures, scoring 10 her 14 in the second half. She sent the game into overtime thanks to a layup with eight seconds left. That capped a 15-point second half comeback. Finally, Hoberg had nine points, six assists, two steals and two rebounds in 39 minutes of work.
