A North Carolina man is accused of traveling to Joplin several times and sexually abusing an 11-year-old girl. Federal authorities have now taken over this case.
Joplin police say they were alerted to this crime on Sunday.
According to court documents, a woman at the TownPlace Suites motel told Joplin police that a man, whom she had been trying to date, was molesting the 11-year-old girl. The suspect, David Perkins, was also at the motel, along with the young girl.
Police say they found an iPad with three videos of Perkins sexually abusing the young girl. Police say Perkins admitted that he had been traveling from North Carolina to Joplin and sexually abusing the girl for about a year at different motels.
Joplin police say this case is being federally prosecuted because of the potential for this child pornography to be viewed worldwide.
"We look at several things when we're looking at cases," says Sergeant Rusty Rives with the Joplin Police Department. "A particular case, like this one, we may have located the crime here. It originally got reported here. But you always have to look at what foes on outside of those boundaries, what potentially may happen, and what is the best quality for your investigation?"
A detention hearing, to decide whether Perkins should be detained without bail, is scheduled for later this month. Court documents show Perkins has been assigned a federal public defender.
