House Fire Claims Young Life

CHEROKEE COUNTY, KANSAS -

An early morning house fire in rural Cherokee County claimed the life of a rural Scammon boy.

At 6:37 a.m., emergency personnel responded to 8543 Northeast Scammon Road, where a two-story home was completely engulfed in flames.

Three year-old Jesse Walker died in the fire.  His mother and a 10 month old infant were able to escape.

Firefighters from Weir, Scammon, Galena and Columbus, along with personnel from the Cherokee County Ambulance service and Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to the scene.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office and the Kansas State Fire Marshal’s Office.

There will be donation cans at several locations in Columbus Apple Market, Dollar General, Graham Accounting, and  in Pittsburg Ron's Supermarket, and Harp's on Fir Road in Joplin. Any donations of clothing etc will be accepted by the Columbus public library. Donations can also be made directly to Derfelt funeral home in Columbus, KS.
