Power Outage at Atlanta Airport Cancels Thousands of Flights:Possible Impact on Holiday Travel

Updated:
PITTSBURG, KANSAS -

Its the busiest travel time of the year, but more than a thousand flights were grounded Sunday  in Atlanta by a power outage. The sudden outage at Atlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson airport, left thousands of passengers sitting in the dark. The FAA implemented a ground stop for flights headed to the airport. Meaning any headed to Atlanta were held at their departure airports creating a ripple impact.  Flights are expected to resume at midnight
according to a Georgia Power statement, a fire in an underground electrical facility may have been responsible for the outage.

Stranded traveler Muhammad Saeed said, "The lights flickered once. It was really scary but we were like, hopefully nothing happens. And then they flickered again and they didn't come back."

The outage began at around 1 in the afternoon.
it soon led to all flights being canceled at the country's busiest airport.
thousands of stranded travelers were forced to wait... Either in planes or in the darkened terminals.
many said they had no idea what was happening.

Cierra Klett, also stranded said, "At first I was like, gosh, what's going on? It could be weather. And then I noticed that it kept flickering and finally it went off, I was like oh no, could be something way worse than just weather."

By Sunday night, the delays and cancellations were already starting to impact other u-s airports.
airlines are now bracing for a ripple effect that could continue into one of the busiest travel weeks of the year.
