NEW YEAR CELEBRATIONS

  • People around the world say goodbye to 2017 and welcome in 2018 with fireworks and other local traditions.  Here in the U.S., many outdoors new year's celebrations were canceled because of the bitter cold.  The throngs who gathered in the Big Apple to watch the ball drop had to brave single degree temperatures in what will go down as one of the coldest new year's celebrations in Times Square history.

DENVER SHOOTOUT

  • One police officer is dead and four others wounded during a shootout in suburban Denver.  Officers were responding to reports of a domestic dispute when a man, identified as 37-year old Matthew Riehl, opened fire on sheriff's deputies.   Two civilians were also hit and injured by gunfire.

COSTA RICA CRASH

  • A small plane carrying ten U.S. citizens and two local crew members in Costa Rica, crashed, killing everybody on board.   Aviation officials there say the Nature Air Charter took off from Punta Islita and was headed towards San Jose.  Investigators are still trying to determine the cause of the crash.

MISSING WELCH GIRLS

  • The OSBI says it has newly discovered notes and documents dealing with a double homicide case in Welch, Oklahoma.  That case pertains to the murders of Danny and Kathy Freeman in December of 1999 and the disappearance of the couple's 16-year old daughter Ashley and her friend Lauria Bible.  She was also 16.  The Freemans were shot in their home before it was set on fire.

ASBURY WATER WOES

  • Folks in Asbury, Missouri are starting the new year without running water.  The city pump has a broken motor and a new one has been ordered but businesses and residents in the small town will have to wait until later today or maybe even Tuesday.

WATERED GARDENS EXPANDED HOURS

  • With the frigid temperatures outside, the Watered Gardens Gospel Rescue Mission in Joplin is expanding its hours.  The shelter's co-founder, James Whitford says until Tuesday, the shelter will be open 24 hours a day.  Even if there are no beds available, people are welcome to keep warm in the lobby and even sleep there once they pass a standard breathalyzer.

        The Southern Stone County, Missouri fire protection district says it and multiple agencies are working a "mass casualty event" at Table Rock Lake.     According to the district's Facebook page, crews are staging at the Branson Belle dock, but the crash did not involve the Belle.     No word yet on the number of casualties.        More >>
