CASA Volunteers Train to Advocate for Abused and Neglected Children

Updated:
MIAMI, OKLAHOMA -

Kathy Crow is a first time volunteer with the CASA program. She's in training to be able to speak for a child going through the court system who has been abused or neglected. It's a program that's facing a shortage of volunteers in Northeast Oklahoma with around 25 current cases and only 14 volunteers on the staff.
"There's a lot of responsibility there. You're speaking for someone who has very little voice" says Crow.
"We develop relationships with the children as well as interview DHS, and the parents and others, to find out what is in the best interest for the child" says Vondie Fletcher, a volunteer.
Anybody 21 or older who passes a background check can apply to be a volunteer, some fit it in with their full time jobs.
"It's overwhelming to see how much they want to be heard. They just want somebody to listen to them and speak for them." says Fletcher.
Arthur Bunn has been a CASA volunteer for around 30 years. He's  seen success stories where kids were taken out of dysfunctional homes.
"I was in a filling station one night and a young man next to me in the aisle, said "Hey, Art! Hey, Art!"...it was my first case. He said "I want you to meet my fiance, we are getting married soon." That was extremely rewarding because he had come from a situation where he could go one way or another in his very dysfunctional family. He has a responsible job and was building a responsible life" says Bunn.
It was a room full of people from different walks of life. Medical professionals, retired military members and leaders in the community. Gathered together with a common goal.
"Being able to see children be happy, being able to see children feel fulfilled..wanted loved..cared for" says Crow.
