JOPLIN HOUSE FIRE

  • Joplin firefighters say a house fire Monday evening appears to have been set by the homeless trying to escape the cold.  It was at 727 Murphy Avenue shortly before 5:00pm Monday evening.  No one was hurt.  Firefighters say there are no working utilities at the vacant house.  It appears a homeless person started the fire.  No one was inside when emergency workers arrived.

DEADLY BAXTER SPRINGS FIRE

  • Baxter Springs, Kansas authorities are trying to determine the cause of a fire that killed a homeowner Monday night.  It happened on West Ninth Street.  When crews arrived they found a mobile home engulfed in flames.  Authorities say 65-year old Troy Eugene Newman died in the fire.

METEOR SIGHTING

  • The U.S. Geologic Survey says a meteor lit up the skies across Michigan Tuesday night.  Many residents in the area reported seeing the fireball and hearing a boom, while others captured it on social media.  The meteor was also spotted in several other states and Canada.

WINTER STORM

  • Another winter storm is headed to the northeast after hitting southern states with snow, ice and freezing rain.  In Kentucky Tuesday traffic was backed up for miles after several tractor trailers and a bus were involved in a crash.  In parts of Texas, roads remained icy all day.  The winter storm system is expected to bring snow and bitter cold temperatures as far north as New England today.
