Pitt State Signs #1 Scorer in Oklahoma

PITTSBURG — Pittsburg State University head men's basketball coach Kim Anderson announced the recent signing of four student-athletes to letters of intent to join the Gorillas for the 2018-19 season.
Pitt State's signees include three high school seniors – Ray Elliott, Layton Hartloff and R.J. Lawrence – and one junior college transfer – A.J. Walker.
"We are excited with our initial signings for the spring recruiting period," Anderson said. "We feel we have addressed some of our needs for next year and will continue our recruiting efforts going forward this spring. All four of these young men come from quality programs and have played for outstanding coaches. We are looking forward to working with them to help them reach their academic and athletic goals."
Elliott (6-4, 165) joins the Gorillas from Tulsa's Nathan Hale High School where he was a two-time Oklahoma Class 5A All-State performer. Elliott led the state of Oklahoma in scoring his senior season, averaging 36 points per game this past winter. He also averaged seven rebounds and five assists per game while shooting better than 47 percent from 3-point range.
"Ray has been a prolific scorer at Nathan Hale High School," Anderson said. "He's an outstanding shooter with great range and athleticism. He also has good size and quickness. Ray is a young man who can make an immediate impact for our team."
Hartloff (6-7, 195) will come to Pitt State from Claremore (Okla.) High School, where he was a two-time All-Conference performer for the Zebras.  Hartloff averaged 21 points and 12 rebounds per game as a senior this past winter. He was named to the Oklahoma Class 5A All-State Tournament squad as a junior in 2016-17 when he helped CHS to a 26-3 overall record.
"Layton has good size and scoring ability. We feel he can be a prototypical MIAA power forward," Anderson said. "We are looking for him to be a good rebounder and knock down the 3-point shot. He averaged a double-double in high school."
Lawrence (5-11, 145) joins the Gorillas from Blue Springs (Mo.) High School where he was a three-time All-Conference and two-time All-District performer. Lawrence averaged 22 points and four assists per game as a senior this past winter. He helped the Wildcats to a 20-6 record as a junior in 2016-17.
"R.J. is a well-rounded, solid point guard who sees the floor well and can also score and get to the basket," Anderson said. "He shoots the ball well from the 3-point line and uses his quickness to be a dangerous defender."
Walker (6-0, 165) will transfer to Pitt State from State Fair (Mo.) Community College, where he garnered honorable mention NJCAA All-America honors this past winter. The Kansas City, Mo., native averaged 13.7 points and 7.0 assists per game during his sophomore campaign for the Roadrunners. He was a first-team All-Conference and first-team All-Region selection at point guard.
"A.J. was one of the top junior college point guards in the nation last year at State Fair, " Anderson said. "He's a great floor leader who can score and penetrate with his outstanding quickness. A.J. should make an immediate impact for the Gorillas."
