Plans for new "Hope Park" in Joplin

Updated:
JOPLIN, MISSOURI -

These new signs are one group's first visible step in their project of bringing east town in Joplin back to life.

"One of the things that's very very important is tradition that's already been established here. This is apart of Route 66 and the original Joplin. This is where Joplin started, and there's a lot of pride in this community" says Scott Clayton, from the Dreams Committee and the Joplin area Habitat for Humanity.

The Dreams Committee has plans in the works to revitalize the area, and inspire current residents with their "Hope Park"

It will be along South High avenue, right by Joe Becker Stadium. It's going to have a pavilion, playground, basket ball court and a mural with the theme of hope.

"People can realize that it doesn't matter where you grow up, or what circumstances you come up in, that if you have a hope and a dream in your heart, put forth some action and you can make it a reality" says Melodee Colbert-King from the Dreams Committee and the Joplin City Council.

The city already owns the land and will be responsible for the maintenance at the park.

Different agencies from architects to the people who made the signs are donating their skills to the facility.

And hopefully give anybody that comes to East Town a place to dream, like the founding group did to come up with the project.

"We just sat down, we had some thoughts. We had some hopes. We had some dreams. We've put some action behind it and through contributors and donors and people like that we are able to make it a reality"

The team has a goal of raising 300 thousand dollars for the Dreams District.

You might remember in 2016, the Fort Worth, TX Zoo needed some help naming its new baby gorilla. They opened up the naming process for zoo goers to vote on their favorite. After a rally by Pittsburg State University supporters, that gorilla got his name: Gus. The Fort Worth Zoo sent a 2018 update to PSU, including a photo: Gus is 37 in. tall, and his arm span is 51 in. He eats tomatoes by the handful for breakfast and lunch, and also enjoys a sweet potato every now and t...
