Lions Drop Opener to Northwest Missouri

RELEASE FROM MISSOURI SOUTHERN ATHLETICS:

Joplin, Mo. -- The Missouri Southern baseball team surrendered four runs, two unearned in the first inning, and couldn't overcome the early hole as the Lions fell 4-3 tonight to Northwest Missouri at Warren Turner Field. 

The Lions (23-18, 11-16 MIAA) held Northwest scoreless from the second inning on, but couldn't complete the comeback. Alex Phillips was 2-for-4 with two RBIs, while Denver Coffee went 2-for-4 at the plate. Cory CanterburyMike MillionRichard Fullerton and Garan Stevens had a hit each. Stevens had a run and an RBI, while Fullerton and Johnny Balsamo scored once. 

Corbin Osburn started and went seven innings, striking out three and allowing two earned runs, but fell to 4-3 on the season. River Wright threw two innings of perfect ball, striking out one. 

Northwest (2318, 18-9 MIAA) got six and two thirds from starter Joseph Hietpas as he struck out seven. Hudson Bilodeau had three hits, while Luke Hassman and Kevin Handzlik had two hits each. 

The Bearcats scored four in the first as a single and two bunts, one reaching on an error led to a run, while a double from Hassman scored another. Two more runs scored in the inning. 

Southern got a run in the second on an RBI ground out from Stevens. The Lions then scored two more times in the fourth on a single from Phillips, scoring Balsamo and Stevens. 

The two teams will be back in action tomorrow with a double-header beginning at noon from Warren Turner Field.

    The Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) says K-7 between U.S. 160 and K-102 in Cherokee County is once again open to traffic. The seven mile section of K-7 has been closed for reconstruction since the spring of 2017. The highway opening marks the completion of the 11-mile reconstruction of K-7 from U.S. 160 north to U.S. 400. Reconstruction of the northern four miles was completed in late 2016. The K-7 roadway has been widened to 44 feet, with 12-foot driving lanes and 10-fo...More >>

    Two southeast Kansas residents pleaded guilty yesterday (Sept. 24) to second degree murder and other charges for a cap on sentencing. They both also agreed to testify against a third suspect. According to court documents, robbery and shooting happened on January 29th, 2017 at 2334 E. Zora St. in Joplin, Missouri.
