Southern Football Wraps up Spring Practice

Updated:

Friday was the final day of spring practice for Missouri Southern football. The team got on the field around 3:30 for their final practice before camp begins in the fall.

Southern is about four months away from their season opener, which will be on August 30th at Nebraska-Kearney. The Lions are looking for a bounce-back season after going winless last year, and picking up just three wins over the last three years.

Head coach Denver Johnson has already tabbed junior transfer Sean Kelly as the starting quarterback to start the year. Johnson has traditionally waited to name a starter until fall, but feels like this year he has "the guy".

"It's not a matter of timing, so much," Johnson says, "I think that Sean has separated himself from the other two. You worry a little bit about how he would adjust, but I tell you he blended in real quick. The team has embraced him. His leadership ability is starting to come through. He's becoming a more vocal leader on the offense, I think even on the entire football team."
