Group seeks to overturn Oklahoma tax hikes for teacher raise

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - An anti-tax group is preparing to gather signatures for a public vote on whether to overturn a package of tax increases approved by the Legislature to pay for teacher pay raises and fund public schools.

The group Oklahoma Taxpayers Unite filed paperwork Tuesday with the Oklahoma Secretary of State to launch a referendum petition. They have less than 90 days to gather about 41,000 signatures needed to place the question on the ballot.

Group organizer Ronda Vuillemont-Smith says the Legislature should have instead looked for waste and fraud within state government instead of seeking more money from taxpayers.

Oklahoma Education Association Executive Director David Duvall called the petition "irresponsible" and says the group will do everything in its power to stop it.
