Four State Allergy Season - KOAM TV 7

Four State Allergy Season

Updated:
JOPLIN, MISSOURI -

"It's like bricks on my head. It's very heavy. My face is heavy. My eyes," says Georgina Merriman.

That's how the Webb City mother feels when she forgets to take her allergy medication this time of year. But with a little girl who loves the park, staying indoors during allergy season isn't an option.

"I just take the pill and tough it out, because my daughter loves outside, everyday," says Merriman.

That pill Georgina Merriman is talking about, is Zyrtec, an over the counter allergy medication, and one of a few recommended by a Joplin allergy specialist.

"Over the counter medications you can get, such as Clariton, Zyrtec, and Allegra. Those are all great because they're antihistamines and don't have much sedating or negative side effects," says Dr. Nathan Box, an ear, nose, and throat surgeon.

Dr. Box says the blooming Bradford pear trees, as wells as elm, ash, and dogwood trees, are the main source of outdoor allergy symptoms. But he has a tip:

"One of the easiest ways that they can try to reduce their symptoms, is when they get home from being outdoors, rinse their nose out with nasal saline rinses. They can buy those over the counter. I say do that a couple times a day, morning and evening and especially when they get in from outdoors," says Dr. Box.

Dr. Box says establishing a solid relationship with your local allergy specialist is key to finding out what works for the individual during allergy season. Georgina knows what works for her, and she's going to make sure her daughter is in the same boat.

"She sneezes a lot and her eyes are watery, so were going to make a doctor's appointment for her as well," says Merriman.
