PSU Signs Agreement Meant to Help ROTC Students Advance

Pittsburg, KS -

Two higher educational institutions in Kansas have partnered with the military for a unique program.  It's meant to help ROTC students, even f they attend a community college.

Call this a new opportunity to serve those willing to serve our country.

"For young men and women who are really seeking to become leaders in our military," says Maj. Gen. Lee Tafanelli with the Kansas National Guard.

ROTC is a four year program.  But Cowley College is a two year college, about an hour away from Wichita.

"The real opportunity is creating a pathway for students that right now does not exist," says Cowley College President Dennis C. Rittle.

The new agreement between Pitt State, The Kansas Army National Guard, and Cowley Community College creates ROTC classes for freshmen and sophomore students at Cowley.  Those students can transfer credits to PSU and take more ROTC classes.

"It allows us to be back on our community college campuses and replay a significant role in developing that leadership for the future," says Maj. Gen. Tafanelli.

Pitt State's ROTC teachers hope this new agreement better attracts Cowley students, who also have the option of going to nearby Wichita State University.

"It's amazing the level of interest in this type of partnership because of the level of patriotism that's very prevalent across south central Kansas," says Rittle.

Cowley College officials say between 20 and 40 students have already enrolled or have shown interest in the new military classes at their college.  PSU signed a similar agreement with Garden City Community College last year.
