RELEASE FROM MISSOURI SOUTHERN ATHLETICS:

Joplin, Mo. -- A home run from Mike Million in the bottom of the ninth sent the Missouri Southern baseball team home victorious tonight as the Lions defeated Fort Hays State, 5-4 at Warren Turner Field.

Southern (25-23, 13-21 MIAA) got a two-hit day from Cory CanterburyAlec Alvarez and Dan LenzAlex Phillips, Canterbury, Million, Jordan Moon and Lenz had RBIs in the game, while Phillips, Million, Alvarez, Moon and Lenz scored a run each. Million had home run number eight on the season, while Moon had two stolen bases.

Corbin Osburn nearly went the distance, but the senior lefty settled for a no-decision after going eight and two thirds of an inning, striking out 11 and walking just two. He gave up four runs, but only one was earned. Brennon Covington came in and got the final out of the top of the ninth to get the win and move his record to 2-0 on the season.

The Tigers (13-35, 5-29 MIAA) got a 2-for-4 day at the plate with a home run and two RBIs from Jordan Wilkerson. Ryan Ruder suffered the loss in relief and moved to 4-8.

Wilkerson got the Tigers on top early with a home run in the third. The Lions answered back, however, with three runs in the bottom of the seventh. Richard Fullerton singled to lead off the inning and was pinch-run for with Moon. Moon stole second and then scored the tying run on an RBI single from Lenz. With two outs, Phillips singled home Lenz to make the score 2-1 and then Canterbury singled home Philips to put the Lions up 3-1 after seven.

FHSU got two unearned runs in the eighth to tie it, but Moon had an RBI single in the bottom of the eighth to put Southern back up 4-3. After the Tigers tied it again in the ninth, that set up the heroics in the ninth for Million. With a full count and two outs, Million launched home run number eight well over the left-center wall to walk-off with the win.

The two teams will be back in action tomorrow afternoon for senior day at Turner Field. Seven seniors will be honored prior to the game. First-pitch is slated for 1 pm.
