Updated:

RELEASE FROM PITTSBURG STATE ATHLETICS:

BOLIVAR, Mo. — The Pittsburg State University baseball team turned in a solid day of hitting and pitching as the Gorillas swept an MIAA doubleheader from Southwest Baptist University Saturday (May 5). The Gorillas were fueled by a 21-hit attack in a 16-9 win over the Bearcats in game one and Pitt State posted a 12-2 win in the nightcap.

The wins helped Pitt State improve to 31-17 overall and 23-13 in MIAA play and land into fourth place in the conference standings. SBU (17-33, 11-25 MIAA) slid into twelfth place in the standings following the day's action.

In game one Saturday, the Bearcats jumped out to a 6-2 second inning lead before the Gorillas rallied back and scored a combined 14 runs en route to the 16-9 win.

Joven Afenir went 4-for-6 with two runs scored and four RBIs to lead the Pitt State offensive attack. Cole Brecheisen and Hunter Clanin both had three hits apiece and scored three times.

Cooper Gardner (7-2) worked the final 6 1/3 innings, limiting the Bearcats to five hits and two earned runs to earn the win.

In game two, Brendan Stanek and Andy Pagnozzi combined on a seven-hit victory against the Bearcats. Stanek (5-5) earned his fifth win of the season by holding SBU to five hits over 6 innings of work. Pagnozzi was equally effective as he held SBU to two hits - and one run - over the last inning of work.

The Gorillas scored three runs in the top of the second for a quick 3-1 lead. Pitt State tacked on nine more runs in the fifth and sixth frames to capture the 12-2 win in seven innings.

Joven Afenir went 1-for-3 with two runs scored in the contest, while Colton Pogue collected two hits, scored twice and drove in a run. Clanin continued his torrid hitting day with three more hits.
