Major Development Planned for Downtown Baxter Springs - KOAM TV 7

Major Development Planned for Downtown Baxter Springs

Updated:
BAXTER SPRINGS, KANSAS -

Saturday May 19th is a date worth marking on your calendar.
Especially if you're in the Baxter Springs area *or* if you're a classic car enthusiast.
Main Street Baxter Springs - otherwise known as Military Avenue.
It's been struggling for years to maintain businesses along this revamped stretch of road.
Don Snow, Baxter Springs Chamber President: "Someone trying to do this solo, without support of other business owners, it's a real struggle."
Now, enter Decades of Wheels.
David Hickmott, "Decades of Wheels": "We want to bring in a lot of economic development to Baxter Springs and this would be the start of a new day in that town, I've spoken to the mayor and the chief of police, the city's chamber of commerce, and they are, jumping up and down about what we're bringing the town."
What is Decades of Wheels?
It's the name of the entity that's purchased the 1100 block of Military Avenue.
Now we need to know - what is decades of wheels going to do?
Hickmott: "We're going to have 30 cars, of historical significance, on display at all times, and that stock, that inventory is going to rotate every 30 days, it's out of a much, much larger collection, so there's always going to be something new to come see."
Additionally, a bistro, with pastries and craft beer, an indoor go-kart facility, and a full service restaurant.
Right now it's mostly empty store fronts - with the recently renovated Ritz being the exception.
Even in the reflection across the way - the east side of Military is a bit sparse as well.
But that - is about to change.
Snow: "I know of another entity that's already looking at a building or two on the east side."
And while chamber president don snow couldn't spill all the details just yet...
Snow: "I know for a fact that there's going to be more, I know for a fact."
As for economic revitalization - Snow says this development, is the catalyst the city needs.
Snow: "You're not going to be able to get this anywhere else, it's going to be unique, it's as unique as a finger print, every town is as unique as a finger print, the question is again, is whether it is a pass through or a go to, we are not going to be a pass through on the way to somewhere else, we are now a go to destination."
The grand opening is set for October - where a promised line up of local, national, and international performers are expected to put on a large scale concert.

The City of Joplin recently approved a new pay plan for city employees, set to go into effect August 4th.     But, is it enough to keep qualified police officers and fire fighters?     While there are still questions as to exactly how individual employees pay will be affected - the biggest question of all - is how to fund the increases.
