Web Extra: Experts In Fraud Prevention Help Educate Area Residents

Updated:

The Area Agency on Aging hosted the "Senior" Scamboree Fraud Education & Prevention Fair today (May 8th, 2018). It took place at the Joplin Senior Center at 2202 S. Jackson.

Seniors and their caregivers were given information from the Joplin Police Department, Legal Aid of Southwest Missouri, Area Agency on Aging, the Missouri SMP, Southwest Missouri Bank and the Social Security Administration. Education was offered on healthcare fraud and abuse and other scams that target older adults.

Bryan Henning with Missouri SMP says, "Right now people are getting phone calls where they are being informed that there is a new Medicare card coming out and that is true, but they are asking like 'Hey we need your information so we can charge you for the new card' and that is not real. Don't give out any information over the phone, any medical information you would give out should start with your doctor. One of the hot things in the state of Missouri is a post card asking for information so that they can get a free back brace or a free elbow brace and what they are doing is that that they are fishing for you medicare. They could be bilking the system for a lot of money and you really won't even know it."
