Demolition Day in Pittsburg

Updated:
PITTSBURG, KANSAS -

Tuesday was a nerve-racking day for Kyle Mullen, owner of the 5th Street Bar & Grill.

"Woke up. Very nervous. It's almost 11 years of my life, getting watched destroyed right next to me, so I hope I have a building and a bar when this is all said and done," said Mullen.

The 5th Street Bar & Grill is one of two businesses sharing a wall with a dilapidated structure at 113 West 5th Street. If things go according to plan, both the 5th Street Bar & Grill and Dittman Insurance, should be up and running on Friday, May 11th. But the bar is still taking a big hit.

"Timing is horrible. It's the last week the students are here. It's our last Taco Tuesday. Obviously, Taco Tuesday is our biggest night of the week," said Mullen.

And the fifth street bar and grill isn't the only one taking a hit.

"This project is 100% paid for by the taxpayers of the city of Pittsburg," said City Manager Daron Hall.

That was never the city's intention, but letting an unsafe building rot in the heart of downtown Pittsburg wasn't an option .

"We had a quick title exchange with the owner, so that was positive. It didn't drag out, but obviously when the taxpayers have to pay that kind of money to take down what was a piece of private property a few weeks ago, it's frustrating," said Hall.

That kind of money Pittsburg taxpayers are paying is $188,000. But the city isn't in the land owning business, and is already making plans for 113 West 5th Street.

"We're already working with developers to develop at two-story building that would be commercial and residential," said Hall.
