Ten Gorillas Earn All-MIAA Baseball Honors

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Ten members of the Pittsburg State University baseball team earned All-MIAA honors today (May 10) following voting of the conference head coaches.

Junior designated hitter Reece Garvie, senior shortstop Colton Pogue and senior second baseman Dallas Reed all garnered first-team All-MIAA honors, while senior relief pitcher Cody White received second-team All-MIAA recognition. White also was named to the third-team All-MIAA squad at third base. He was joined on the third-team All-MIAA list with senior outfielder Joven Afenir and senior relief pitcher Cooper Gardner. Senior outfielder Hunter Clanin, junior starting pitcher Brendan Stanek, senior outfielder Andrew Vogelbaugh and senior catcher Josh Whisler all were tabbed honorable mention All-MIAA.

Additionally, Afenir and White were named to the MIAA Gold Glove Team. White earned the Gold Glove distinction for his play at third base.

Garvie (Edmond, Okla.) has a team-leading .390 batting average with 11 doubles, three home runs and 37 RBIs. He currently ranks fourth in the MIAA in batting average.

Pogue (Blue Springs, Mo.) is hitting .387 with an MIAA-leading 56 runs scored, 15 doubles, nine home runs and 37 RBIs. He ranks sixth in the MIAA in batting average.

Reed (San Diego, Calif.) is batting .366 with 12 doubles and 30 RBIs in 40 games played. He missed eight games due to injury.

White (Hemet, Calif.) has a 2-1 record with a 3.10 ERA and 10 saves in 16 relief appearances. He has registered 28 strikeouts in 20.3 innings of work. White also is batting .316 with nine doubles, six home runs and 36 RBIs. He has made just eight errors in 136 total chances (.941 field pct.).

Afenir (Murrieta, Calif.) has a .369 batting average with 51 runs scores, 11 doubles and 41 RBIs. Defensively, he has made just one error in 103 total chances in centerfield (.990 field pct.).

Gardner (Kansas City, Mo.) has a team-leading 7-2 record with a 3.00 ERA in 19 appearances. He has recorded 56 strikeouts in 48.0 innings on the mound.

Clanin (Columbus, Ohio) is batting .346 with 50 runs scored, 12 doubles, five home runs, 44 RBIs and eight stolen bases.

Stanek (Overland Park, Kan.) has a 5-5 record with a 3.99 ERA in 13 starts on the mound for the Gorillas. He has fanned 49 batters in a team-leading 70.0 innings of work.

Vogelbaugh (Liberty, Mo.) has a .265 batting average with 11 doubles, eight home runs and 28 RBIs in 40 games played. He has missed eight games due to injury.

Whisler (Tulsa, Okla.) is batting .297 with eight doubles, four home runs and a team-leading 48 RBIs.

The Gorillas finished the regular season with a 31-17 overall record and a 23-13 mark in MIAA play. Pitt State will open play in the 2018 MIAA Tournament tonight at Warrensburg, Mo. The No. 4 seed Gorillas will face No. 5 seed University of Nebraska-Kearney at 7:30 p.m. at Crane Stadium/Tompkins Field.
