Grilling Safety Tips

Updated:
JOPLIN, MISSOURI -

Paul Teverow is working the grill for his friends and family from the United Hebrew Congregation for their annual picnic.

"We have hamburgers, veggie burgers, and kosher hot dogs"

As he cooks on this gas grill, he makes sure to not leave the grill unattended, which is also recommended by the Joplin Fire Department

"Nationwide, every year, there's about 9,000 fires started by grilling accidents. And that can be from anything from people leaving grills unattended, to not following proper instructions or having a way to be able to extinguish the fire if it got out of hand" says Battalion Chief John Hubbard, from the Joplin Fire Department.

He says they respond to five to 10 grilling accidents every year, and they're hoping for zero this year.

Fire instructor, Andy Starnes shared a video on Facebook, showing his thermal imaging camera shows normal heat from where his burgers are cooking. But then he shows how hot the deck is.

"Look how much heat is radiating on those boards. Seemingly innocent, but we are getting 100 plus degrees radiating on this deck, directly underneath there"

Both he and reps from the Joplin Fire Department recommend having a water source near by.

Different grills come with different risks, John recommends you soak hot coal with water before you throw it away, and following instructions with propane grills.

"Any kind of propane gas grill is probably the most hazardous just because you're dealing with a compressed liquid gas"

He also suggests making sure there's no gas leaks.

"As soon as the grill was finished, not only did I turn it off, the burners there, but I turned off the gas too" says Paul.

Some advice for all the chefs out there, so they cook their food, and not their deck.
