PSU Club Baseball Set to Compete in World Series on Home Field

Updated:

The PSU club team is making its first NCBA World Series appearance, and they are aiming to win the title on home turf.

Last month, the Pittsburg State club team won the Great American South Conference, punching their ticket to the NCBA World Series...

"For me the biggest thing was having my parents and grandparents and friends be able to watch me play one more time, and that was something that really resonated with me and was important for me was kind of the first thing that struck after we won that regional," says Austin Kratz.

It started as an idea to form a team three years ago while watching the club baseball world series at Jaycee Ballpark, But now, it's a reality for PSU club president Nate Grimaldi.

"We knew we had the talent on campus, and personally, we all wanted to play, for whatever reason different guys weren't playing or couldn't play.  So seeing that -- that was something that...wow, you know these guys have it made.  They're playing ball and they're playing in the World Series and it's on our home turf, so we almost feel almost a little entitled to come and defend that, and you know, show them what Pittsburg baseball is all about," says Grimaldi.

Fast forward to this year with a title on the line at an all too familiar setting.

"There's no better ballpark in the Midwest or even in the us for us than Jaycee ballpark.   I mean, it's literally home for us.  We dreamed about playing there as little kids, watching the older high schoolers play there.  We played there in our league, and then practicing and playing there everyday for Colgan, and during the summer teams, so it's really become associated with what i think of when i think of baseball -- as a whole.  And it's our home field, and being able to come back there again for the world series for kind of our last hurrah, for some of us, after playing there our whole entire lives is something special," adds Kratz.

The World Series tournament kicks off this Friday at Jaycee ballpark.  Pitt State will face Siena at 1 p.m.
