Gorillas Draw Augustana in 1st Round of Central Regional

PITTSBURG — The Pittsburg State University baseball team will open NCAA Division II Central Regional action Thursday (May 17) at Magnolia, Ark., against Augustana (S.D.) University at Walker Stadium at Goodheart Field.
 
The Gorillas earned the No. 4 seed in the Central Regional, which will be held May 17-21 on the campus of the host school, Southern Arkansas University. Pitt State will face the No. 5 seed Vikings in the opening game of the eight-team regional Thursday at 10 a.m. (CST).
 
Pitt State's Central Regional games will be broadcast live in the Four States on the Gorilla Sports Network on the radio dial at 100.7 FM, 107.9 FM and 1340 AM. Veteran broadcaster Eddie Lomshek will call the action. Fans can hear ESPN 100.7's live broadcasts anywhere in the world on the internet at: www.espn1007.com/go. The game also can be heard through the ESPN 100.7 app for phones or mobile devices.
 
Ticket prices for fans making the trek to Magnolia for the Central Regional are:  $8 adult, $6 students w/ID & Seniors and $3 children (ages 7-12). Children 6 and under will be admitted free when accompanied by a paying adult. Single game tickets will be good for the entire day's action. There will be no tournament passes.
 
The Gorillas (33-19) are making the program's fifth trip to the NCAA-II National Tournament – their first appearance in the NCAA postseason since 2002. Pitt State made three straight trips to the Central Regional from 1997-99 prior to its 2002 berth.
 
The Gorillas advanced to the semifinals of the 2018 MIAA Postseason Tournament before being eliminated a game away from the championship game Sunday morning by Emporia State, 11-5.
 
Augustana (44-8) clinched an automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament by capturing the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Tournament championship. The Vikings, who have set a school single season victories record, are making their third trip to the NCAA Division II National Tournament (2011, 2014, 2018).
 
In other Central Region action Thursday, No. 1 seed Southern Arkansas (36-17) hosts No. 8 Emporia State (32-21) at 1:30 p.m., No. 2 Central Missouri (37-15) takes on No. 7 Oklahoma Baptist (31-17) at 5 p.m. and No. 3 Central Oklahoma (35-19) faces No. 6 St. Cloud State (29-15) at 8:30 p.m.
 
The winner of the Central Regional will advance to Cary, N.C., for the Division II World Series May 26-June 2.
