Joplin Police Investigate Another Random Apparent Drive By Shooting

Updated:
Joplin, MO -

Joplin police are asking for help to investigate an apparent random drive by shooting.

Last night's shooting follows other incidents.  Police say earlier this month, two people in separate vehicles fired on each other.  Another incident happened in April.  Police say eight gunshots were fired toward a home.  No injuries were reported and there have been no arrests in either case.

Two other shootings happened in April; one of them involved a vehicle for a state contractor who was working on a sign.

This latest incident...

"We couldn't imagine there were actually gun shots going on out here," says Terence Pierce.

Pierce enjoys video games.  What happened at a home across the street from him on South Kenser Court put more reality in a game than what he wanted.

"We were in the middle of a gun fight in the game when it happened," says Pierce.

When he sees bullet holes in his neighbor's home...

"A little disconcerting when something like this happens in your driveway," says Pierce.

Police agree.

"In this case, both the victims and us are struggling to determine why they were targeted," says Captain Trevor Duncan with the Joplin Police Department.

Police say several shots were fired at the home across from Pierce shortly before 10 last night.  Investigators say a mom and her daughter were inside the home and one bullet in particular could've damaged more than property.

"The bullet entered through the front of the residence, through an interior room, and into an interior wall.  We are fortunate there were no injuries.  Immediately after the gunshots, there was a vehicle that left the area at a high rate of speed," says Duncan.

Pierce says, "That was the first thing I asked police was if there was anybody hurt."

"We are looking into the possibility that another neighbor was potentially the target," says Duncan.  "However, we're very preliminary.  We don't know that for a fact."

Pierce hopes further investigations still point to this shooting being a random crime.  He doesn't want the criminals coming back to his neighborhood.

"We're just making sure we lock our doors when we let our dogs out.  But other than that, trying not to think about this too much," says Pierce.

Joplin police say this year started slower for gunshot calls than previous years, but now calls are starting to increase.
