The crime happened on August 7th, 2017 around 3:30 a.m. at 4th and Sergeant Avenue in Joplin, MO. Officer Joel Taber says he saw a truck traveling north on Sergeant Avenue from 7th Street pulling a trailer without any lights. He pulled the vehicle over. Taber says that's when the driver, Keith Wald, started the truck and fled. While driving away from the stop, Wald threw an explosive device out of the drivers side window which exploded about 15 feet from Taber.

During the pursuit, a second explosive device was thrown from the passenger side of the vehicle by co-defendant Nathan Felton and exploded next to the patrol car.

Wald and Felton were charged with second degree assault on law enforcement, armed criminal action, felony resisting arrest and unlawful possession of an illegal weapon.

Wald had previously entered a plea of not guilty. On May 14th, 2018, Wald entered a plea bargain and pleaded guilty to second degree assault (Class B Felony). Four other counts were waived as part of the plea bargain. Wald waived his right to request a pre-sentence investigation and was sentenced to ten years in prison. First, he'll spend 120 days in an institutional treatment center. After that, a judge will reassess his sentence and decide whether he'll serve the remainder of his time in prison or on probation. Wald was also ordered to complete 75 hours of community service.

Co-defendant Nathan Felton is scheduled to be in court on May 22nd, 2018.
