Recent Rain Helping to Improve Drought Conditions

Even though the Four State Area had to deal with strong to severe thunderstorms from Monday afternoon and into early Tuesday morning, the rain that it brought was a welcome sight for some drought-stricken areas. According to NOAA/NWS, their tally of rainfall over that event had the area seeing at least between half an inch to 2 inches of rain. For some areas out in southeast Kansas, some thunderstorms kept redeveloping over the same spots. That contributed to some areas of rainfall between 2 and 4 inches.

Sticking with Chief Meteorologist Doug Heady's pattern, we'll have more chances for rain and t-storms this week and taking us through the rest of the month. That certainly backs up what the monthly drought outlook for May is suggesting for us. With continued rain chances, drought conditions in parts of southeast Kansas may be dropped by the end of the month. For areas closer to Wichita and south central Kansas, a drought of some form may persist by the end of the month. Nonetheless, areas out that way will see improvement thanks to our recent round of rain and other rain chances to follow this month.
