National Trails Day - June 2

Updated:

DIAMOND, Missouri: National Trails Day® is June 2. Across the country, thousands of individuals and organizations will offer local stewardship and recreational opportunities to celebrate America's magnificent trails. This party is going to be BIG as it honors the 50th anniversary of the National Trail System. In a single day, we will collectively improve 2,802 miles of trail—the distance across the US. You can pledge to improve a trail by leaving it better than you found it.

As part of the park's 75th anniversary celebration, George Washington Carver National Monument is pleased to be hosting National Trails Day on Saturday, June 2nd from 8 a.m. to noon. This special park anniversary event will feature a 7.5 km walk in the park, information on hiking safety, nutrition, national trails, kid's activities, and more.

Join a ranger and members of the Dogwood Trailblazers Volksmarch Group to "Find Your Park" on the 7.5km (4.6miles) boundary path walk at 8 a.m. with a two-mile option available. Please wear comfortable shoes, and bring a water bottle and insect repellent. Participants can also join a ranger on the ¾-mile Carver Trail at 10 a.m. or 2 p.m. for a tour. At 11 a.m., you can learn about hiking safety, Leave No Trace, and the National Trail System with a ranger talk. Exhibit tables will also be setup with community healthcare educators and organizations to help people connect with local health resources.

This "Find Your Park" event invites the public to see that a national park can be more than a place -- it can be a feeling, a state of mind, or a sense of American pride. Beyond vast landscapes, the campaign highlights historical, urban, and cultural parks, as well as the National Park Service programs that protect, preserve and share nature, culture, and history in communities nationwide.

Administered by the National Park Service, an agency of the Department of the Interior,

George Washington Carver National Monument preserves the birthplace and childhood home of George Washington Carver, scientist, educator, and humanitarian. The park is located two miles west of Diamond, Missouri on Highway V, then ¼ mile south on Carver Road. For more information, please call the park at 417-325-4151 between 9:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., visit the park website at www.nps.gov/gwca, or visit the park Facebook page.
