Driver's License Dilemma

Updated:
INDEPENDENCE, KANSAS -

A trip to driver's license services is a big deal for Dolores and Bob Kyle.

"My husband can't drive anymore, and so I have to drive," said Dolores.

The retired couple traveled from Coffeyville to Independence, Kansas, to renew Dolores' driver's license, but were shocked to find the office had moved.

"For someone my age, where I'm not out all the time and haven't been to Independence in a little while, it's been quite a problem," said Dolores.

Drivers license services for Montgomery County, Kansas has temporarily relocated to Fredonia, and the reason is an arson investigation. On May 4th, 7th, and the 14th, the Independence Fire Department responded to suspicious fires within the Independence Corporate Office, home of driver's license services.

"Right now the building is in the hands of the state fire marshal's office: code enforcement division and the investigation division. They're looking at both aspects, the safety of the building and the investigation of the fires themselves," said Independence Fire Chief Shawn Wallis.

The chief wouldn't comment on the extent of the fire damage because the arson investigation is ongoing. But he does encourage anybody with information to contact the independence police department, and he's not the only one that wants a suspected arsonist caught.

"It irritates me, to make it the easiest. But it is an inconvenience," said Dolores.
