Uniontown School District Receives Fitness Grant

Updated:
UNIONTOWN, KANSAS -

An exciting change is coming to the Uniontown School District.

The high school will be the home to the town's first fitness center. This summer, the district will receive 100-thousand dollars worth of fitness equipment from the National Foundation for Governor's Fitness Councils.

It will then be used to transform a room at the high school into a community fitness center.

Zachary Franklin, a Uniontown High student, says, "It feels pretty good knowing the school district and the community has a way to exercise better now."

Vance Eden, 2018-19 Uniontown Elementary Principal, says receiving the equipment isn't just a big deal for the school - but for the whole town.

He says, "It's a really unique and remarkable opportunity, especially for a community our size and where we're located at to have a dedicated space accessible to really anyone."

USD 235 is receiving the grant because of its commitment to making sure their students are physically fit.

The school has activities in the morning for students who arrive early. They also recently installed water bottle compatible fountains at the elementary school, and have a walking trail that goes around the perimeter of the high school that can be used by students throughout the day.

Superintendent Brett Howard hopes receiving this equipment will encourage more students to be physically active.

He says, "If we do away with obesity, we're also helping so many other health issues. You know, it goes to make a well rounded child. So, it's not just the physical it's the emotional well being and we feel that this can be a big part of that."

The equipment will be installed at the school this summer.

Two other Kansas schools will receive fitness centers as well. One in Topeka, and Lincoln Elementary in Fredonia.
